What is Outsider Art?

Where does the work of outsider artists fit into the art world? First, some general background information about these artists is important to establish. Some outsider artists were prisoners who used art not only as a means of expression but also as a pastime. Others were patients in mental treatment facilities usually possessed with the same motivation mentioned above. They tended to be elderly and isolated and surrounded by the fear of oncoming death.

1st Sydenham Arts Festival in London

An Arts Festival? In Sydenham? Whatever were they thinking of?

But this tiny corner of South East London has a great heritage of art, music & literature. French Impressionist Camille Pissarro lived and worked here, as did Sir George Grove, compiler of the famous musical dictionary. Booker Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro also lived in Sydenham. More recently, the area has been home to the prestigious Sydenham International Music Festival, which for over ten years has showcased performances by renowned classical musicians from the UK and abroad. Included in this year's festival will be fine furniture, miniatures, pottery,clothing, musical instruments, hand-painted art, iron ornaments, weavings, brooms, baskets, florals, hex painting, jewelry, leather, cut paper art known as “scherenschnitte,” Pennsylvania German calligraphic writing called "fraktur", beeswax candles and more.

Short History of Tole Painting

Tole Painting is a celebrated folk art, which decorates metal and wooden objects. Teapots, Coffeepots, tables, chairs, and chests, including hope chests, toy boxes and jewelry boxes find a new lease of life with a touch of Tole painting. Toleware is painted tinplate. Also called "japanned-ware," it originated in the Orient, spread to Europe and then to America where it reached a height of popularity in the nineteenth century.

Pennsylvania German Folk Art

Pennsylvania German art is a distinctive folk style transplanted by European immigrants who settled in southeastern Pennsylvania. Characterized by the bold use of color and motifs that emphasize birds, flowers, and elaborate decoration, Pennsylvania German art was nurtured on the isolated farms where those settlers made their homes.

"Strange Folk" an indie arts and crafts festival

Strange Folk is the Heartland's largest outdoor indie arts and crafts show. Over 10,000 folks attended their 2008 event, which featured 120 modern makers from across the country, along with plenty of eco-freindly craft activities, exhibits, live bands, and local cuisine under a canopy of beautiful trees!

Make an American Folk Doll with Apples!

Apple Dolls are folk dolls originating from early rural America when settlers made dolls from whatever was at hand. Apple dolls are made by carving a face in an apple and drying it. Due to the different effects drying produces, no two dolls are alike.

"Folk Art Exhibition" at Birminingham Museum, Alabama

Throughout 2009, the Museum is devoting its Arrington gallery to the exhibition of folk art. Objects on display are from the Museum’s permanent collection, augmented by an occasional private collection loan. The term "folk art" is used broadly to encompass work that has been variously labeled as outsider, naïve, primitive, visionary and self-taught. All of the artists represented are American – many African-American – and most are from the Southeast.
