Fraktur Gallery: Fraktur Motifs in Clay and Wool

Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center

105 Seminary Street Pennsburg, PA

An exhibit of hooked rugs inspired by fraktur and organized by hooked rug artist Susan Feller of West Virginia, complemented by redware pottery from the Heritage Center collection and private collections.
Fraktur motifs are an inexhaustible design source for many craftsmen. In this exhibit we collected two media: clay and wool. Either using native clay or recycled woolen fabric, the traditional crafts of pottery making and rug hooking have been carried on for generations.

Fascinated by her family heritage, the design elements, colors, and people of another era, Susan Feller has led groups of rug hookers through the history of illuminated documents, or fraktur, found in Southeastern Pennsylvania, the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and Ontario, Canada.
Introducing the artists by names and or symbols, analyzing design elements and explaining the original colors, the materials used and how they have changed with age, Feller assisted many of the exhibitors to design a unique hooked rug pattern. These designs may document an event, memorialize a loved one, or simply complement their modern décor.
As you explore this collection, notice the techniques and skills in rug hooking are as varied as the original fraktur artists and their work. From primitive wide cuts to narrower strips dyed in shades to enhance the floral designs, each artist created their design to match the skills of rug hooking they have developed.

The Greater Chicago Jewish Festival for 2010

The Greater Chicago Jewish Festival for 2010 is a special event. It will have all of the components that have been created over the years: three stages with music, dance and storytelling; a family stage; a Kosher Food Fair; an Art Fair and Organization Fair, but it will have a different focus.

This Festival marks 30 years since the first Festival drew the Chicago Jewish community together. Therefore, we will concentrate more of our performer time and artists on those from Chicago or with Chicago roots. You have to be at this Festival whether you are new to the event or remember them all.

Since 1980, the Greater Chicago Jewish Festival has created just that experience for hundreds of thousands. Today, it is the largest Jewish cultural event in Chicago and the largest ongoing Jewish festival in America. We call it the Heart and Soul of Jewish Chicago because on this one special day, you can find everything that is Jewish in Chicago. We create our own "town square" filled with the sights, sounds and smells of a dynamic and creative community. The Festival is a community event, not a commercial event.

The Jewish POCET is very proud that people come from all over the United States, as well as from Canada and Israel, to see the Festival, sell at the Festival and perform at the Festival. We are also gratified that every aspect of our community is represented in some way.

What is Outsider Art?

by
Lynn Marmitt

Where does the work of outsider artists fit into the art world? First, some general background information about these artists is important to establish. Some outsider artists were prisoners who used art not only as a means of expression but also as a pastime. Others were patients in mental treatment facilities usually possessed with the same motivation mentioned above. They tended to be elderly and isolated and surrounded by the fear of oncoming death.

Perhaps the largest group of outsiders were from the Southern, rural areas of the country. They witnessed the economic and political changes in history and basically had little faith in the government. Many sought their energy from religious fervor and they often incorporated their visionary experiences within their religious systems. This group of artists generally led restricted lives because of finances so they used their imagination as their mode of travel and escape from routine. Most were lower middle class, unskilled manual workers, who had a desire to establish self-worth and conquer the feelings of isolation.

In the deep south minorities were already considered outsiders from the mainstream culture. The minority artist begins his or her work at any age because it is a means of satisfying his or her personal needs. Black outsider art acquires a great deal of energy from its African antecedents. This is seen in the works which often depict rock paintings, sacred trees, water holes, shrines, carved and painted houses and ceremonial architecture and dance grounds or monuments. “ The inspiration originates from the inability of society to meet the needs of every individual, especially the universal needs for identity, self-worth and the control over one’s life. Their works are mortal signs and wonders, manifestations of man’s capacity to come to terms with, reflect upon, describe and interpret the everyday experiences and the deeper and mysterious spiritual resonance that define the form and meaning of the human condition.”

Southern folk art has deep ties to the environment. It is usually a personal expression which was not designed for museums. This group of artists watched the country evolve into the space age from a pre-industrialized society. They saw the social and technological changes evolve. A sincere respect for elders and tradition is a constant theme in their work. Many used their art as a visual response to this change and so their work merges both their literal and imaginary worlds.

Isolate or naive art is a type of folk art in which the artists use the art for their own purposes. They possess a need to express deeply felt feelings and usually do so in untraditional ways. Their works are alive with originality and are appealing because of the emphasis on color, rhythm and design. Even though they are considered to be unskilled, their works are sought after by most folk art collectors. Isolate artists are generally from the rural areas of the deep south and their work gives us a perspective into American history. Their pieces usually are not signed because they don’t think it’s important. Outsider artists illustrate an individual’s capacity to interpret everyday experiences and to describe them to the world using a technique that comes naturally to each of them.
